Region II, Chile
From San Pedro the road climbs more than 2,000m to the turn-off to Hito Cajon (4,665m). This part is hard work and boring as the road is straight and the scenery unchanging. After the turn-off the scenery improves and the climb is easier, continuing to the Portezuelo de Suco (4,825m) before descending to a low point (4,560m) by the Salar de Pulsa. From here it is a short climb up to the Portezuelo Paranal. The best views are on the descent from the pass.
