Departamento de Apurimac, Peru
We had bad weather for this pass, so didn’t have time to enjoy it. As seems to be the case with most Peruvian passes the gradients are gentle and the road follows a valley before zigzagging to the top. Just before we reached the top the lightning and hail began. All we can remember of the descent is that we were crapping our pants and the surface was good enough to enable us to pedal for all we were worth and average over 30kph down to Progreso as the claps of thunder echoed around us and fires started by the lightning smouldered on the valley slopes.
