This pass is on paved Ruta 22 between Lima and La Oroya. It is a long climb up from the coast and is sometimes cited as being the highest paved pass in South America. However, Abra Patapampa is definitely higher and Portezuelo Paranal probably is as well, and both of these passes are now paved.
Though we haven’t crosssed this pass, we’ve been unfortunate enough to cycle on the Carretera Central only a few kilometres below Abra de Anticona. The road is narrow and absolutely rammed with trucks and coaches. It’s a deathtrap for cyclists – avoid at all costs!
