Departamento de Arequipa, Peru
One of our favourite passes in the Andes. Leaving the lake by Arcata village the road climbs up to the Arcata gold and silver mine. Here after registering with security we were provided with a pick-up truck to escort us the two kilometres through the mine. Leaving the mine at 4,700m there is a very steep kilometre, but after this it is a more gentle and very beautiful climb up to the pass. Views from the top are excellent and the descent into the valley beyond the pass is fantastic. The road is in good condition the whole way.
