This pass is the highest point on the road through Antofagasta de la Sierra, Argentina’s loneliest town. The bad state of the road from the Salar del Hombre Muerto to Antofagasta make the climb hard work – there are quite a few sandy and corrugated sections, which meant we had to push a couple of kilometres up to the pass. The top is on a very flat section of road and 15kms after the pass you are still less than 100m below the highest point. The surface is generally better on the descent (south side) of the pass.
